This Guy Boyd candlestick holder is a lovely piece of Australian studio pottery from the 1950s–60s, glazed in a soft speckled green.
It’s a clever, simple shape. A wide, softly rounded outer dish steps up to a middle ring, then to a small centre ring that holds your taper candle. The two outer rings catch the drips, so the wax stays off your table. The glaze is matte and speckled, and the foot ring is left as bare clay. It’s signed Guy Boyd on the base.
Guy Boyd (1923–1988) learnt his craft from his father, Merric Boyd, widely regarded as one of Australia’s foremost art potters. Guy made small runs of handmade pieces marked with his own name from Melbourne between about 1955 and 1972. [Keep this next line only if you’ve seen an object record: His work is held in the Queensland Museum collection.]
Stand a tall taper candle in the centre and put it on the dining table, mantel or sideboard. Or leave the candle out and use it as a dish for keys, rings and the odd box of matches.
**Condition:** [Excellent. The glaze is clean and even, and we can’t find any chips, cracks or repairs. The speckles are part of the glaze, not marks. Add any wax residue, glaze nicks or hairlines on the rims or foot ring here.]
**Dimensions:** 3cm high × 20cm diameter
**Care:** Let any wax set hard, then lift it off gently with your fingers or a wooden spoon (no metal tools, they can scratch the glaze). Hand wash in warm soapy water and dry well. Keep it out of the dishwasher.
We ship Australia-wide, and local pickup from Mount Coolum is available by arrangement.
