Canisters like this one sat on kitchen benches all over Australia in the 1940s and 50s. Usually there was a set (See matching cake tin listed separately), lined up beside the kettle and used every single day.
This one is spun aluminium with a raised SUGAR panel on the front, a rolled rim and a domed lid finished with a small bakelite knob. It’s a simple, sturdy shape with nothing fussy about it. That’s exactly why these old pieces look so right in a country-style or mid-century modern kitchen now.
Put sugar, tea or coffee beans in it, or stand it on an open shelf with your other pantry finds. It also makes a handy jar for wooden spoons beside the stove, or your secret stash of favourite treats you’re hoping nobody finds.

Condition: It’s 80-odd years old and shows it in the best way. There are soft scuffs and a worn, dull patina across the body. The lid has scattered dark speckling. Inside, the metal has greyed and there are marks and light pitting on the base (see photos). The bakelite knob is intact.

Care: Hand wash in warm soapy water and dry it well. Keep it out of the dishwasher, because aluminium will darkens in there.
